(403 posts)which is a serious crime is unacceptable. Yes we must have candidates from all walks of life with many different experiences and ways of dressing and communicating. I draw the line at sexual assault, especially since a powerful attack line against Trump/GOP is their own long list of sexual abuse accusers and enablers despite their abuse of women.

DU, and public opinion, are not a court of law.

(116,261 posts)...but it is easy to see why some folks are skeptical with the timing and the nature of the allegations.

(2,346 posts)If this is all made up, why did the victim tell multiple people in 2023 before Platner was running?

(116,261 posts)He never appealed to me. I was aware of his populism but that is about all. Just as I was never a big fan of Fetterman. There was a kink in there somewhere that I just did not have time to research. But, one question I would present that no one has asked: Will the Platner supporters vote in the next election if he is not on the ballot?

(2,346 posts)This has nothing to do with him claiming to be a progressive. It's him being a rapist.
Way too many people who call themselves progressive were willing to overlook a nazi tattoo, blaming women for rape, admitting to mistreating partners, racist posts, using retarded as a slur in interviews, sexting a bunch of women after being married, and anti gay posts. I consider all of those things antithetical to being progressive not something to be cast aside because someone claims to be an economic progressive. Progressivism needs to include all the minorities to do more than just reinforce the same patriarchy, racist, heteronormative, ablist things.

(3,302 posts)Rape is not ok. It will never be ok. It's not ok that the con is a rapist. It's not ok that Hegseth is a rapist. It's not ok Kavanaugh is a rapist. It's not ok that Epstein is a rapist.
It's not ok and we as a society have got to insist more forcefully that it's not ok.

(116,261 posts)That is your interpretation. The Democratic Party should denounce it. They should not endorse the candidate. But should they make their decisions on allegations alone? If he is guilty, he should step down, just as Swalwell did. If the victim wishes to file charges of rape, then she should be encouraged to do so. If he decides to stay in the race, the people of Maine will be the jury.

(3,302 posts)overwhelmingly say they do not want their November election choices to be Collins and a credibly accused rapist. The polling will reflect that the people of Maine will want Platner replaced on their ballot.
kentuck
(116,261 posts)....would it not? But I wonder if the Platner supporters will still vote in November if he is not on the ballot? How devoted are they to the Democratic Party?

(3,140 posts)I used to think it was shallow to shun candidates who shun mainstream aesthetic choices in favor of the "common man" schtick, but maybe there is some sense to it. People who want to selectively disregard norms might be in a higher risk category even if the norms they openly disregard seem relatively inconsequential. The last thing we need in politics is more people who think rules don't apply to them.

(1,517 posts)You start by actually proving WHY "Beware!" is great advice: Fetterman; the Maine Guy (I'm Pennsylvanian, so I'm not supposed to care).
But THEN you detour into misguided sarcasm, suggesting Fetterman and Maine Guy OUGHT TO BE ACCEPTABLE TO DEMOCRATS, because ......"FOX"? "Republican test"?
