ME-SEN: Mamdani says embattled Platner should drop out of Senate race in Maine
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani became the latest Democratic lawmaker to say that Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee in the Maine Senate race, should drop out after a woman he dated in 2021 accused him of sexual assault.
“I believe that it’s time for him to drop out of the race,” Mamdani said of Platner, when asked about the situation during an unrelated press conference Tuesday morning.
The mayor’s opinion is significant as a prominent democratic socialist elected to office whose support for progressive candidates in New York brought them to recent primary victories. He is seen as a voice of the progressive movement within the Democratic Party.
Mamdani and Platner have also shared some supporters, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who has remained silent so far on the recent scandal, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who called for Platner to withdraw Monday evening.
