https://www.politico.com/news/2026/07/07/zohran-mamdani-graham-platner-senate-00988555I believe that its time for him to drop out of the race, Mamdani told reporters at New York City Hall, adding that he believes a campaign termination is the only appropriate response for Platner in the wake of the latest sexual assault accusation against him.

(2,354 posts)Under Maine state law, the spot on the general election ballot belongs to the candidate, not the party. The state Democratic Party cannot strip him of the nomination or force his name off the ballot... only Graham Platner himself can make the decision to officially withdraw.
Maine law dictates that a candidate must voluntarily withdraw by a strict deadline (July 13th at 5:00 PM) in order for the Secretary of State to declare a ballot vacancy.
If Platner steps down by that deadline, the state party has until July 27th to select a replacement nominee according to their internal bylaws.
If Platner refuses to step aside and holds out past July 13th, the ballot is locked. Even if he drops out after that date, the Democratic ballot slot remains permanently vacant, ensuring an automatic win for Susan Collins.
Because the party lacks the legal mechanism to force him out, their only tool is maximum political pressure (which is exactly why you are seeing the state party leadership, national senators, and the DSCC entirely pull their endorsements and campaign funding all at once.
They have to convince him to jump, because they cannot push him.

Texas rep from the 35th (San Antonio and Austin), Greg Casar (notably progressive), also has withdrawn his support for Platner.
