Trump celebrates installation of slave owner statue in Washington

President Donald Trump has celebrated the installation of a statue of Caesar Rodney, a Founding Father and slave owner, near the White House, encouraging Americans to go and see it.

The imposing bronze figure, highlighted by the president ahead of America’s 250th birthday, has been a source of controversy after it was taken down at the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

A Delaware delegate to the Continental Congress, Rodney played a crucial role in the fight for independence from Great Britain. On July 1, 1776, he received word that his state’s delegation was deadlocked on whether or not to break free — and that his vote could tip the balance.

“Although he suffered from asthma and facial cancer, Rodney immediately set forth on a 80-mile overnight journey by horseback from Dover, Delaware, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday evening. “Enduring a raging thunderstorm, he arrived 250 years ago this very day, July 2, 1776, to cast his decisive vote, and secure America’s glorious destiny of Freedom and Independence.”

Washington was a slave owner. Good luck getting his statues removed - at least for the foreseeable coming decades. I don't support the installation of this statue, but I can already see the right wing making a thing about the left making a thing about it. Trump's actions and frankly, the article's title seems like it's intentionally trolling Democrats with a target who was a slave holder yes... "At Rodney's death, he held 18 enslaved people. His will manumitted three of advanced age upon his death, and held the others to a manumission schedule he devised." (Wiki) He was also instrumental in raising funds for the war. He also had disfiguring facial cancer and wore a scarf to hide it. He lies in an unmarked grave. The title of the MSM piece seems like "bait" to get Democrats to shit on Rodney - and they'll say, "Oh, he suffered from facial cancer and he was a hero of the revolution and the 'Libs" are punching down on a disabled war hero." They're so fucking predictable. I don't think this is a hill to die on.
