I am glad to see that some folks ran after her to help after she started floating down the street.

(81,554 posts)~20 minutes of rain in NYC should not lead to complete infrastructure failure like this.
Kudos to the man who got out of his vehicle to help the folks in the submerged car on the Jackie Robinson Pkwy heading toward the Grand Central.

(172,897 posts)NOT TRUE!!!
When Sully landed that plane in the Hudson, it only took 24 minutes for HUNDREDS of New Yorkers come to their rescue.
Despite some shortcomings, it's still the greatest city in the world.

(27,342 posts)Almost every time some one, and usually a few have come to check on me. This was in my 40's, 50's and not the obvious gray-haired woman in my early 70s that I am now.

(1 post)WTF?! 😳 Does anyone else find this very odd? Where is Mamdani? Has he made a statement or offered information?

(85,369 posts)A lot of this is driven by climate change. There was a week timespan a few years ago where there was record breaking rain, twice!

(15,601 posts)Homes near the river destroyed, cars and people washed away, at least five people drowned in their cars or basement apartments, if I remember right.
Officials at the time were speculating a number of homeless were drowned and washed into the river by the flood current coming off the streetsand never found.
The water in those videos was at least 2 ft. deep at street level, and it looked fast. That's strong enough to drown you if you get pulled into the current and trapped under a car.

(5,950 posts)NYC's stormwater system is meant to handle about 1.75 inches of rain in an hour.
This was 2+ inches in 30 minutes. An unusual downpour but hardly a freak event, the system is undersized.

(37,224 posts)my daughter lives there but I think she's been on set this week. I did go to the weather channel and they say the worst has gone through, and then there's a cool front coming in. They had a weird week w/the extreme heat and flooding.

(12,600 posts)Water surge is ferocious. I'm surprised others weren't washed away.
That poor woman swept up like a rag doll. Hope she managed to survive.
Awful!
