HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said Wednesday he will oppose his partys effort to curb President Donald Trumps ability to continue the war in Iran.
The lawmaker told Fox News that he will vote against a Democratic war powers resolution, which Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced earlier in the day, next week. The resolution, if approved by legislators, would require Trump to receive congressional approval before continuing the war.
Now Im reading that theyre now have to force another, you know, war powers vote. And I will vote against that now because we have to stand our military to allow them to accomplish, you know, the goals of Epic Fury, Fetterman said, referencing the name of the U.S.s operations against Iran.
Trump helped start the war by assisting in a fatal Israeli airstrike on ruler Ali Khamenei. The president didnt receive approval from Congress, which has the sole ability in the U.S. to declare war. Schumer said during his Wednesday press conference that the Senate will vote on curbing Trumps power next week to reassert congressional authority.

(715 posts)Hes become Im less sure its from brain damage as much as it is calculated word choice to show not just support for the war in Iran, but trust in the administrations tactics. Epic Fury sounds so much sexier than war with Iran or even Iranian Conflict. We all get to be part of denouement of Trumps epic movie narrative, but I real life where the plot is written as we go. The shame is that the media has seen to him being one of the loudest democratic voices nationally. I know breaking with the party is real news, but is that really all he has to offer?

(23,509 posts)he was a big old Democrat. I am sorry but he is too stupid now to be a Democrat.
I remember the cognitive problems my mom had after a stroke. She tried to hide them, (like she could not read anymore but would walk around with a book). And it only got worse because more strokes were to come.

Couldn't say enough about supporting tRump and his war, mocked his fellow Democrats. It was sickening.
And we can't even call him what he is because he still has the Sacred D after his name.

(13,453 posts)Fetterman is actively opposing fundamental Democratic Party moral principles, undermining "red line" positions of the Democratic Senate, and advancing Republican priorities. As far as I'm concerned, that goes way beyond the sort of policy differences that we respectfully hammer out and debate within the Democratic "family." And I could be wrong, but I suspect if an exception to the "Don't bash Democratic public figures" rule were requested in his case, it might be granted.
When those with D after their names do things like join with Republican's to override the veto of a Democratic governor, a line must be drawn -- as Clayton Anderson did in NC. (Denied turncoat Dems access to Votebuilder, a critical organizing tool normally offered free to all Democratic candidates. All lost primaries by something like 40-50 points.)
Further more, "Support Democrats" is NOT an admonition against criticizing a Democratic elected or mounting a primary challenge to a Democratic elected. It is about supporting Democratic nominees. And of course, there are exceptions to that too. (e.g., NE Democratic Party support for Independent Dan Osborn over MAGA plant running as a Democrat -- if Cindy Burbank somehow fails to win the nomination and drop out to stop the asshole.)
And just a refresher:
Do not post support for Republicans or independent/third-party "spoiler" candidates. Do not state that you are not going to vote, or that you will write-in a candidate that is not on the ballot, or that you intend to vote for any candidate other than the official Democratic nominee in any general election where a Democrat is on the ballot.
Do not post anything that smears Democrats generally, or that is intended to dissuade people from supporting the Democratic Party or its candidates. Don't argue there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.
Why we have this rule: Democratic Underground is an online community for politically liberal people who understand the importance of working together to elect more Democrats and fewer Republicans to all levels of American government, and as such we expect our members to support and vote for Democrats at election time. Rare exceptions are granted at the sole discretion of the DU Administrators. (Current exceptions: Dan Osborn for U.S. Senate, Nebraska)
Don't bash Democratic public figures
Do not post disrespectful nicknames, insults, or highly inflammatory attacks against any Democratic public figures. Do not post anything that could be construed as bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for any Democratic general election candidate, and do not compare any Democratic general election candidate unfavorably to their general election opponent(s).
Why we have this rule: Our forum members support and admire a wide variety of Democratic politicians and public figures. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but our members don't expect to see Democrats viciously denigrated on this website. This rule also applies to Independents who align themselves with Democrats (eg: Bernie Sanders)

(11,776 posts)and have the hidden posts regarding Manchin/Sinema to verify that is not the case.
They both undermined Biden and the Democratic party. Like Fetterman does. Manchin in particular derailed the BBB. And HB1. And undermined Democratic policy. I never bashed or said anything which could be construed as an ad hominem attack against either. But had they not sided with republicons, we'd have voter protections and infrastructure to run on.
But the rule you posted is subject to the whim of alerters and the "random" selected jury. I do believe that in the past there have been individuals who were targeted for removal or censoring. That's definitely how it feels and it's why I don't post a lot. My liberal opinions apparently aren't compatible with a Democratic website. After posting condemnation of Manchin's vote against BBB, I was told to get on my knees and give thanks for Manchin. Guess whose post was removed.
I'd like it a lot better if the rules, like the one you cite, were clearly defined and enforced by moderators. Not the whims of possibly-manipulative posters.
This shouldn't be needed, but it is -Note to jurors: I'm not "interfering with the jury process". I'm simply giving an honest answer to a reply to my previous post and expressing how I feel based on my experiences.

Break down the friggen votes, how many are worthless measures that almost every Senator voted for.
Strip the asshole of every bit of power now. His defection will end up gaining us at least two seats in November from fence sitting voters realizing Dems will actually fight.

(31,920 posts)A golem is an animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore created from mud or clay to serve as a protector or servant, often brought to life through mystical kabbalistic formulas. Famously associated with Rabbi Loew of 16th-century Prague, the golem serves to protect Jewish communities from persecution, acting as a tireless agent for its creator, yet it can run amok.

(54,528 posts)the US in 2015/2016 and lost in the Democratic primary).
If you, for instance, go watch him attacking Trump and Rethugs as a Biden POTUS advocate in 2020 you can see a massive difference between pre-stroke Fetterman and the post-stroke Fetterman.
BTW, that post of mine you put up was from 8 days BEFORE his stroke in May 2022.
Here is some background as to serious changes exhibited by Fetterman (post stroke) as given by Fetterman's former chief of staff Adam Jentleson:
John Fetterman insists he is in good health. But staffers past and present say they no longer recognize the man they once knew.
https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/john-fetterman-struggle-mental-health-clinical-depression.html
https://archive.ph/0bKU7
When John Fetterman was released from Walter Reed hospital in March 2023, Adam Jentleson, then his chief of staff, was proud of his boss for seeking help for what the senators office and his doctor had said was a case of clinical depression. His six weeks of inpatient care had been the latest medical setback for the Pennsylvania Democrat, who had had a stroke mere months before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, nearly derailing his campaign against Republican Mehmet Oz. But a year after his release from the hospital, Fettermans behavior had so alarmed Jentleson that he resigned his position. In May 2024, he wrote an urgent letter to David Williamson, the medical director of the traumatic-brain-injury and neuropsychiatry unit at Walter Reed, who had overseen Fettermans care at the hospital. I think John is on a bad trajectory and Im really worried about him, the email began. If things didnt change, Jentleson continued, he was concerned Fetterman wont be with us for much longer.
His 1,600-word email came with the subject line concerns, and it contained a list of them, from the seemingly mundane (He eats fast food multiple times a day) to the scary (We do not know if he is taking his meds and his behavior frequently suggests he is not). We often see the kind of warning signs we discussed, Jentleson wrote. Conspiratorial thinking; megalomania (for example, he claims to be the most knowledgeable source on Israel and Gaza around but his sources are just what he reads in the news he declines most briefings and never reads memos); high highs and low lows; long, rambling, repetitive and self centered monologues; lying in ways that are painfully, awkwardly obvious to everyone in the room.
Fetterman was, according to Jentleson, avoiding the regular checkups advised by his doctors. He was preoccupied with the social-media platform X, which hed previously admitted had been a major accelerant of his depression. He drove his car so recklessly, Jentleson said, that staff refused to ride with him. He had also bought a gun. He says he has a biometric safe and takes all the necessary precautions, and living where he does I understand the desire for personal protection, Jentleson wrote, referring to Fettermans rough-and-tumble town of Braddock, Pennsylvania. But this is one of the things you said to flag, so I am flagging.
Another red flag, Jentleson added: Every person who was supposed to help him stay on his recovery plan has been pushed out. Fetterman was isolated, had damaged personal relationships, and was shedding staff. The turmoil in his office continued over the following year. Since winning election in 2022, he has lost his closest advisers, including three of his top spokespeople, his legislative director, and Jentleson. His circle of trust has shrunk, and people I spoke with made it clear that they expect more staffers to depart.
