One of the warring factions in the movie is based on a confederation of California and Texas. That indicates that the political landscape is very different from our own, and that their "sides" wouldn't resemble any of the sides we have now.

It's not entirely clear what the political perspectives of any of the major players are. I mean, the thought of a confederation including Texas and California indicates a political landscape unlike our own.
