Relationship with Trump may be beyond repair, Keir Starmer told

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/apr/03/relationship-with-trump-may-be-beyond-repair-keir-starmer-told

Keir Starmer has been warned his relationship with Donald Trump may be beyond repair after the US president derided the prime minister for consulting his team about military decisions, in a mocking impersonation.

In a new low for UK-US relations, Trump appeared to imitate Starmer in a weak voice during an Easter lunch speech at the White House, and said the UK was “not our best” ally.

The episode is Trump’s latest broadside at Starmer and the UK’s “old” aircraft carriers after the prime minister declined to let the US use British military bases for its initial strikes on Iran.

Following the latest attack on Starmer, diplomatic and political figures said he was right to brush off the criticism but added that the relationship was very damaged and he would need to redouble efforts to built international relations elsewhere.

The UK, as a small country has little leverage and isn’t really that powerful either on the world stage at this point. They’re also heavily dependent on the US for trade, and even more so after Brexit.

Trump knows he can bully them and get away with it.

Starmer should just say nothing directly but indirectly say that the EU and UN are open to negotiating an exit path for Israel and the US to cease operations against IRAN and ignore stupid Trump's comments and if pressed for a response by the media, say he's focusing on more significant considerations and doesn't have time to address Mr Trump's comments.

related, from the aricle:

Kim Darroch, the former national security adviser, and a former British ambassador to the US, said Starmer was “right to resist getting directly involved in this ‘war of choice’”.

“But it has unquestionably done significant damage to his personal relationship with Trump,” he said. “It could conceivably blow over. But it is equally possible that a damaged Trump could lash out, whether against Nato, or selected Europeans, including the UK, perhaps with new or higher tariffs – a risk which makes rebuilding our links with the EU single market an immediate priority.”

You should be saying "Donald Trump is irrational, ignorant, untrustworthy and unfit for diplomatic and strategic relationships. We look forward to standing by the American people when they next have a reliable administration in office."

He goes to Toronto, or maybe Ottawa, and then he tells Chump to come and visit him there. He should say "I'm not setting foot inside the United States, so you come here."

Chump won't come of course, and he'll look like an asshole. I wish it would happen within the context of the World Cup Games. There's no way to predict the schedule, but maybe there would be a playoff of UK or Canada against a big team. Then King Charles can say "I need to attend this because it's more important than coming to the US."

If he did that, I'd root for UK or Canada to win.
