Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters Tuesday that Democrats would submit a counteroffer to Republicans and declared that his party will still insist on reforms to rein in ICE demands that Republicans have repeatedly rebuffed.
We have to rein in ICE and stop the violence. We need reform, Schumer said at a press conference after meeting with his Democratic colleagues at lunch Tuesday. Every one of my colleagues, every one, A, believes we should be unified, and, B, we need reforms of ICE every single one.

(13,952 posts)...that doesn't play into Trump's hands, unfortunately.
Minnesota has completely quieted down, and most of the public has forgotten what the big deal was. The iron was hot for a week or so.
Now, we are looking at the prospect of unmasked ICE officers doing TSA work, and speeding up wait times at airports (while federal workers quit or go on food stamps). We need to dump this shutdown yesterday.
We've completely forgotten the health care subsidies, for one thing. We just keep humoring the hotheads and overreactors. We're still doing well in the polls, but we would be doing much better if we focused on the economy. The shutdown is negative earned media.

(59,444 posts)Honestly, that's pretty insensitive.
My contact with ICE is a 19 year old college student, a DACA kid whose status was suddenly switched last year from legal to illegal when DACA was scrapped, and who was taken from an emergency room after receiving a head injury. We have no idea where he's going to be sent. Originally they said to the country where his family came from and where he has relations he has never met. Now it seems like he will be sent to a third nation. He has heard that South Sudan is a possibility.
He is one of thousands.
So tell me again about how ICE is reined in.

Due process?
Officer identification?
Masks?
Training?
Body Cameras?
Now they're at the airports. Effing secret SS police and Trumps own personal army.

(6,571 posts)But ICE and work out the ICE portion at another time. If Rs reject that because of Trump - fuck them and saturate the media with the Republican airport mess.
