Theres no Trump Doctrine, just a map of the world that the President wants to write his name on in big gold letters.
Trump presented his interest as the musings of a canny businessman: I said, Why dont we have that? You take a look at a map. So Im in real estate. I look at a corner, I say, I gotta get that store for the building that Im building, et cetera. You know, its not that different. I love maps. And I always said, Look at the size of this, its massive, and that should be part of the United States. He added, Its not different from a real-estate deal. Its just a little bit larger, to put it mildly.
What some of Trumps own senior officials once viewed as the delusional musings of a dilettante have now become a genuine international crisis, one that could leador maybe it already has ledto the effective end of NATO. After this week, is there anyone who can credibly claim to be sure that the United States, under Trump, would honor the commitment to mutual defense that is the foundation of the alliance?

(7,226 posts)It was Putin, most likely, who initiated the idea, and who suggested the swap. Putin takes Ukraine, unopposed by NATO; Trump takes Greenland, unopposed by Putin.

(150 posts)that tRump has with Putin and, I suspect, Xi (regardless of their public posturing), to divvy up the world into hemispheres, with each of them RULING one. Its no accident that most of the countries hes threatening (with the exception of Iran) are in the Western Hemisphere. Theyre part of his imaginary empire.

(21,959 posts)The US has small access to the Arctic. Russia and Canada have the most. Trump wants Greenland to increase US presence there. Climate change has caused the Arctic shipping lanes to be open longer than before. It is cost effective to use those lanes instead of going through other route - Panama Canal.
Because of this, the US Navy was tasked with building up US offences for the Arctic.

"A Blue Arctic," outlining how the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard will address increasing geopolitical activity and climate change in the Arctic by enhancing military presence, partnerships, and capabilities. It's a response to rising Russian and Chinese militarization, focusing on sustained presence, integrated operations, and protecting American interests in the increasingly accessible polar region.
