Illinois agency confirms ICE agents are swapping out rental plates

The Illinois Secretary of State has revoked an Illinois license plate from a rental car agency, saying federal agents switched plates on at least one rented vehicle.

Alexi Giannoulias' office offered few details about the instance but said in a news release said that "when the office's investigation confirmed that ICE agents switched plates on a rented vehicle, it revoked that license plate immediately."

The office sent the letter to EAN Holdings LLC, which is the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car. The address listed in the letter is in Lombard, which also appears as Enterprise Leasing Company of Chicago in an online search.

The office sent an identical letter to 19 rental car companies on Oct. 24, which they shared in a news release on Dec. 4.

"There have been multiple reports of federal ICE agents illegally swapping out the license plates displayed on vehicles that are registered in the State of Illinois, including vehicles registered to rental car companies," it read, emphasizing that swapping, altering, tampering, "or any other change made to a license plate that is properly displayed on any vehicle is unlawful."
