George Conway to Run for NY-12 (Nadler's Seat) as a Democrat

Another high-profile candidate is joining the race to succeed retiring New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler.

George Conway, the conservative lawyer turned Donald Trump critic who was married to former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, declaring his intention to run for New York’s 12th District, which includes Manhattan’s Upper West and East sides.

“I’m going into the arena. I’ve already put my money where my mouth is, but now it’s time to lay it all on the line,” Conway wrote in a Monday post announcing a new Substack that did not directly reference a congressional campaign.

“We need Democrats to take over Congress — and not just any Democrats, but the most fearless and relentless ones,” he wrote. “The next two years will show us exactly how much lawlessness Republicans will accept. Doing nothing is the same as saying yes.”

10. Well, he IS running as a democrat, and there arent any other never-trumpers that have been willing to go that far...

That's a cobalt-blue district, and yes it's filled with Wall Street 'republican' business types, but he practiced corporate contract law for most of his career, so he might be a good fit to bridge what gap there is there.

3. Do we have any idea of his position on issues?

I think he is a life long conservative Republican. This is a Manhattan seat held by Nadler. This is a seat that a liberal or progressive Democrat can hold.

This would be different if it were say a red or purple seat, but it's not. When we regain power will we regret Conway when he votes against us on various bills?

5. OTOH, a convert is often more of a fighter against all the things that made him convert.

A convert can be a strong defender of his new party. And he divorced Kelly Ann ("alternative facts&quot . Remember her?

8. It depends what he rejected

It is possible he rejected MAGA and Trump as very incompatible with small government Republicanism or right leaning libertarian. While incompatible with MAGA it might also be incompatible with liberalism, new deal FDR or great society LBJ programs, or progressivism.

That is why I suggested we absolutely need his positions on issues. He, after all, joined or didn't leave the Republican party of Reagan, the Bushes and probably Nixon.

Just like Liz Cheney, who I respect for standing up to Trump is not someone I would support for an overwhelmingly Democratic seat.

I didn't realize he was running in the district as Conway. I like George, but I also like Jack!

It's academic for me, because I don't live in that district, or anywhere near. But I will watching this race with interest.

He might not want to say, but it might be worth wasting a phone call to find out?

I do more than "name recognition".

I've heard him talk and I like what he says.
