NJ-GOV: Baraka might consider Lt. Governor post, if Sherrill asks

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has not ruled out running for lieutenant governor of New Jersey and would entertain an offer to become Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s running mate if she asks him, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed.

A senior advisor to Baraka, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, told the New Jersey Globe that Baraka is preparing to sit down with Sherrill to discuss the campaign.

“Mayor Baraka sits in a unique place relative to the math Mikie needs in November,” the advisor said. “Demographic groups have changed in the state, and based on the results, that makes him the logical choice.”

Baraka finished second in Tuesday’s six-candidate primary with 20.5% of the vote. He won Essex County by six points and carried Union County by nine points.
