Question: do DU'ers have any means of contacting one another

If the internet is taken down?

I’m not trying to fear monger. I’m trying to be prepared.

Any suggestions, etc.

Thanks.

Very true. I like having maps and atlases in the car, not just for navigation but casual perusal. Hellbound Hellhound Jun 2025 #18
There is a DU Facebook page and I think one on Reddit. Not used a lot, but that's what I'd check if DU were down. Silent Type Jun 2025 #3

HAM radio and local community is what you have at that point.

Join your local County Committee or any sensible organization to meet local Democrats.

We need face-to-face meetings. Social media will be the death of us!

Unless you have good ol' fold-out physical maps locked away in your cars, finding your way to a meetup is also a no go. Same with GPS; Internet goes down and GPS goes with it in most places, unless you have a SATphone.

So many people don't understand how interconnected the world has become. Hell, many cell phones rely on internet connections now too, so even that's out of the question.

Just in case...

But when it comes to meetings and people, the best way to know where to meet is to meet regularly and it just becomes part of your routine.

I guess I'm one of those weirdos who loves just looking at maps and learning about the area, and it's a far sight easier to read a map in the wilderness than use a cell phone.

You're right though, when it comes to meeting folks, the best way is through repetition. I know I never used to drive East back when I was young, and when I got a job a few dozen miles to the East it may as well have been in another country! But after driving it for ten years I could tell you every back road off the top of my head.

One of the reasons that I posted this was to get people to think. We all need to have plans in place as to how to contact family and friends, etc.

I live in a thick red area. I know who my like minded neighbors are, and we have discussed a game plan.

It can’t ever hurt to be as prepared as possible.

I absolutely acknowledge the fact that we may be forced to live without the internet, and I have tried to have a plan in place for that scenario. Should it never happen, then what does it hurt to still have a plan? Not a damn thing.

The first thing that would be taken out would be the satellites, which control everything. That's not my opinion; that's the opinion of every expert that I've ever heard say when they talk about a doomsday scenario for the United States.

Pickling your own foods, having a large supply of salt, drying long term nonperishables and grains, and buying off market honey have been my priorities. If nothing happens, great!

But if it does, we're ready.
