Los Angeles Congresswoman Democrat Maxine Waters was denied entry into a federal facility where she was attempting to visit detained union leader David Huerta. In the footage, a guard can be seen slamming the door in Waters' face as she repeatedly tells him she needs to get in.
Members of congress have the authority to visit federal detention facilities for the purpose of conducting oversight. Three members of congress were also barred from entering an ICE facility in New Jersey in May, prompting Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO) to submit a letter to the Department of Homeland Security demanding recognition of the right of members of congress to visit ICE facilities unannounced at any time under the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020 (Public Law 116-93), and the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2020, Sec. 532, which stipulates:
None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available to the Department of Homeland Security by this Act may be used to prevent...a Member of Congress...from entering, for the purpose of conducting oversight, any facility operated by or for the Department of Homeland Security used to detain or otherwise house aliens... [nor] to make any temporary modification at any such facility that in any way alters what is observed by a visiting Member of Congress... compared to what would be observed in the absence of such modification.
David Huerta is the president of the California Service Employees International Union (SEIU). He was detained by ICE and injured while responding to a raid at a clothing manufacturer in Downtown Los Angeles last week. Federal officials said Huerta obstructed an ICE vehicle while they attempted to serve a warrant. He was briefly hospitalized and remains in federal custody.

(123,407 posts)David Huerta was arrested while standing up for immigrants rights. Today, a judge set him free after federal authorities attacked, injured, and unjustly detained him since Friday. We are relieved that David is free and reunited with his family and we are deeply grateful to the hundreds of elected officials, civil rights leaders, labor partners and allies from across the nation who stood in solidarity and demanded Davids release.
But this struggle is about much more than just one man. Thousands of workers remain unjustly detained and separated from their families. At this very moment, immigrant communities are being terrorized by heavily militarized armed forces. The Trump regime calling in the National Guard is a dangerous escalation to target people who disagree with them. It is a threat to our democracy. The federal government should never be used as a weapon against people who disagree with them.
SEIU will always stand up to protect the rights and dignity of hard working people, and the safety of workers in the workplace. Imagine what it feels like for thousands of workers around the country to be attacked by masked men with weapons, or to bear witness to their co-workers getting dragged away, knowing their kids may not see them agai ...

Labor leader David Huerta was released from custody on Monday on a $50,000 bond following his arrest last week during a protest against immigration raids in Los Angeles.
Huerta, the Service Employees International Union California president, made his first appearance in court on Monday, where federal authorities in a criminal complaint charged him with conspiracy to impede an officer. The felony charge carries up to six years in federal prison, according to the U.S. attorneys office in L.A.
Chanting Bring our brother home, some 60 labor activists rallied in support of Huerta on Monday in front of San Franciscos state building, part of a national chorus of protests calling for Huertas release.
I am truly, truly sad by whats going on right now, Kristin Hardy, SEIU 1021s San Francisco vice president, told attendees. He (was among those) detained for exercising their First Amendment rights and advocating for immigrant workers. He belongs home. He belongs here with the people fighting for the working class ...

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) called President Trump a cruel, dishonorable human being as she criticized the deployment of National Guard troops in downtown Los Angeles.
In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Waters expressed concern that the military-grade weapons carried by members of the National Guard will end up being used against protesters ...
