The Girls Are Fighting is a catchphrase used to joke about people falling out with each other publicly. The phrase was popularized by a 2019 video of American singer Azealia Banks commenting on the feud between Nicki Minaj and Cardi B in which she says, "Whaaat? What is the tea, the girls are fighting! Nooo… the girls are fighting, why?!" The Instagram Live became a notable reaction video in subsequent years, while the phrase "the girls are fighting" came to be used to joke about former friends having public disagreements.

I think I forget sometimes that a lot of y'all are not living in the center of queer culture, in the gayest city in the country with the highest percentage of Black people. That's a blind spot I didn't realize I had.

I did not know that a lot of you are hearing this phrase for the first time in a queer context! But it makes sense if you're an ally, or have limited exposure to LGBTQIA2S+ culture.

"The girls are fighting" is a reference to drag queens.

From threads, don't know how to link.

Or this:

Sorry I don't keep up with weird memes.

culture. It escaped containment and became more mainstream as a result of the 2019 video, and is now used to imply a little bit of schadenfreude or messy interest in people publicly disagreeing.

Sorry I don't keep up with weird memes.
No need to apologize! It can be helpful to do so, as evidenced by this very thread. If you see an odd phrase it can be helpful to google it and find a possibly deeper meaning.

Should I start calling women girls?

Banks obviously meant it as an insult.

AOC used the meme when speaking to a media person at the Capitol, not her girlfriends.

She needs to learn to compartmentalize better and differentiate between social contexts.

According to AB. Is that a meme?

She's quite colorful with her choice of words.

ETA:

Here she is defending her use of the word "faggot"

Calling something a meme is not some magical thing that wipes away bigotry, sexism, homophobia etc.

People do all the time in a variety of contexts. Some uses are sexist, some aren't. Some are contemptuous, some are familiar, playful, jocular or loving. It's a big world.
