More Americans see meaningful differences between GOP, Democratic Party: Survey

A growing share of Americans say there are important differences between the Republican and Democratic parties, according to a new CNN/SSRS poll.

The May survey, released on Sunday, shows 81 percent of respondents say there are important differences between the two parties, while only 18 percent say the parties are “pretty much the same.”

The 63-point gap in responses marks a noted increase from the 44-point gap in late 2023, when 72 percent of respondents said there were important differences between the parties, and 28 percent said the parties were pretty much the same.

More Americans had been describing the parties as meaningfully different over the preceding decade, but the trend was not as stark as it was over the last year and a half.

Without knowing what they believe the differences are.

Do more believe Democrats are baby blood suckers or have more finally figured out the policy differences?

The same poll (that we should take with a grain of salt) shows more people believing that the Republican party has stronger leadership and is able to get more done.

While neither political party is viewed as especially strong or effective, skepticism weighs particularly heavily on the Democratic Party. Americans are far more likely to see Republicans than Democrats as the party with strong leaders: 40% say this descriptor applies more to the GOP, with just 16% saying it applies to the Democrats. They’re also more likely to call Republicans the party that can get things done by 36% to 19%, and the party of change, by 32% to 25%.

Even there, it's not even clear if this is an approval of republican "strong leadership" and an approval of what they're "getting done."

Most polls don't tell us as much as what the headlines purport.
