1. Local leaders, community condemn South Park ICE raids

... Video obtained by NBC 7 showed how San Diegans instantly responded to the ICE worksite enforcement operation at Buona Forchetta and Enoteca Buona Forchetta on Beech Street on Friday. Community members surrounded ICE trucks and faced off with agents in military garb with guns.

“Shame, shame, shame,” some people yelled at the agents, video showed.

Local leaders, including all of San Diego's democratic Congressional delegation, spoke out on Monday against the raid. Some took issue with the federal judge who approved the warrant to detain employees at the popular restaurant. Others spoke out against the timing of the raid -- just before the Friday night dinner rush -- that they said created an unsafe environment for the community ...

"I acknowledged that they have a job to do, there’s a boss in Washington asking for this, but the execution of this was needlessly reckless," Gloria said. "Doing this on a Friday night during dinner service at a very popular restaurant in a residential community really created the circumstances that you saw happen there” ...

... "Because of the ICE raids going around all over the U.S. in El Cajon, in San Diego, we're getting 50 more calls a week, more than what we normally get because of the ICE raids," said Habib Hasbini, an immigration lawyer. "But obviously a lot of people unfortunately don't have a basis to stay here, so they leave by themselves or they try to stay here through other ways through asylum, but some people don't have a way to stay here so they end up leaving on their own."

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria issued a statement about the ICE investigation, saying, "Federal actions like these are billed as a public safety measure, but it had the complete opposite effect. What we saw undermines trust and creates fear in our community."

Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre also responded, saying, "This ICE immigration raid in South Park wasn't public safety. It was an over the top, militarized show of force that doesn't belong in a residential neighborhood" ...

"You can get a copy, they should have a copy of their service forms to determine each one's status as opposed to raiding the place like that in the middle of a time where people are having nice evening, having dinner, to put this military style scene in front of everyone. It's very chaotic, let alone very intimidating," said.

Immigration officers swarmed a restaurant late Friday afternoon in South Park, escorting two employees out ...

Usually Buona Forchetta has customers waiting out front, lined up to enter ...

Instead, after an hour-and-15 minute operation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement ... large and small groups talked about what had just happened. It was a crowd of curious, mad, disappointed people joined by television crews with cameras ...

The restaurant’s manager, Renato Ametrano, described what happened, saying the ICE officers showed “up with no explanation.” He said there were about 20-25 officers who “surrounded the building and then came inside” pushing him against the wall and handcuffing him ...

... “We, as neighbors, small business owners, and fellow South Park residents, are rallying together to offer immediate support to these valued members of our community,” said the page from Small Business Owners of South Park and Beyond, which was headlined “Support for Detained Buona Forchetta Employees” ...

Juan Vargas said that Monday morning’s news conference was being held outside San Diego’s federal courthouses specifically because a local federal judge — U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen Crawford — signed off on a warrant that he said authorized agents to detain everyone working inside the restaurants, whether or not they were undocumented.

Vargas said part of the lawmakers’ demands were to meet with the chief judge for the Southern District of California to inquire how and why warrants of this sort were being approved ...

We're really pissed off here and are going to fight back. I applauded the residents who stood up to ICE that day. They are the real heroes while the ICE agents are now equal to the gestapo.

There are 2 NO KINGS protests downtown on June 14th. One is at the San Diego Civic Center and the other is only about 1 mile away at Waterfront Park.

I'm glad that they said we need to fight them in the courts. That is what Clinton said we must do yesterday. They right.

I'm also glad that the puppy killer was mentioned. A lot of people do not keep up with politics and they need to be filled in.
