To our knowledge, Bob Dylan has only mentioned Donald Trump once – passing reference in his book Chronicles. As ever, the gnomic wisdom of Dylan is perceptive – he wrote:

“I mean, who’s the last individual performer that you can think of – Elton John, maybe? I’m talking about artists with the willpower not to conform to anybody’s reality but their own. Patsy Cline and Billy Lee Riley. Plato and Socrates, Whitman and Emerson. Slim Harpo and Donald Trump. It’s a lost art form. I don’t know who else does it beside myself, to tell you the truth.”

And your subtle call out of my post in the lounge by referring to it as hagiographic, did not go unnoticed.

Maybe you could use your own voice to speak out loudly against Trump, instead of pondering why Bob Dylan is not speaking out. And I'm not talking about just posting on DU. If you are that concerned, then why not do it loudly yourself at sources which will reach the general public?

Or, if you are concerned enough to question Bob Dylan's choices via a DU post, maybe you could try to contact him to ask him why he is not speaking out. He is the only one who knows why. Nobody on DU knows.

Bob Dylan really owes nothing to people he doesn't even know.

"Murder Most Foul" from 2019 was a long "commentary" on that act and our culture since then.

I always thought he was more spiritually driven than politically driven.

This is in the liner notes on "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", the second album, from a comment on "Blowin' in the Wind" :

In 1962, Dylan said of the song's background: "I still say that some of the biggest criminals are those that turn their heads away when they see wrong and know it's wrong. I'm only 21 years old and I know that there's been too many wars. . . You people over 21 should know better." All he prefers to add by way of commentary now is: "The first way to answer these questions in the song is by asking them. But lots of people have to first find the wind."

The only other times he was "involved" with "presidential politics" perhaps was when he visited Jimmy Carter who invited him to the White House (they became friends) and when he was given the Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.

I could go on . . .

Maybe one verse could be construed to be about Reagan, but the rest of the song is pure mysterious Dylan poetry:

Standing on the water casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing
Distant ships sailing into the mist
You were born with a snake in both of your fists
While a hurricane was blowing
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with truth so far off, what good will it do?

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

So swiftly the sun sets in the sky
You rise up and say goodbye to no one
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one
Shedding off one more layer of skin
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed
Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space
Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame
Preacher man seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks
Molotov's cocktails and rocks behind every curtain
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot
Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response

Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune
Bird fly high by the light of the moon
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman

I merely asked if he's said ANYTHING about the greatest threat to the US in our history. I couldn't find anything. Maybe someone else knew of something. He's no God and with so many affected by the orange imbecile, he should've said or done something to support dump's opposition. I do condemn dump though. To hell.

Bob Dylan isn't exactly culturally relevant anymore. I don't think anyone is waiting on Dylan's take on the Trump administration, and most Dylan fans are not Trumpsters anyway. While we're at it, what have Peter, Paul, and Mary or the Smothers Brothers had to say? Maybe we can get the cast of Laugh-In to give a quote.

I'm not exactly sure what the reason is for this long thread, where you repeat and repeat your supposition that Bob Dylan hasn't attacked Trump. I'm not sure I see any relevance there. Dylan is 80. I'll be 80 next month. Dylan sang folkish songs for a few years. I sang folkish songs at the same time. I didn't make a career of it. Dylan did.

Protest music was big in the early 1960s, so that's what Dylan sang and wrote. Not much later, he shifted topic material. He didn't give speeches. He didn't write editorials. He wrote and performed songs.

He doesn't owe anyone anything, frankly. If you can get in touch with him, though, ask him what he thinks of Trump. He'll probably tell you, but he'd be likely to ask you: What the fuck do you care? Could you give him an answer that made sense? I doubt it.

Mon Jun 2, 2025, 03:24 PM

There is no reason whatsoever for him to make any statement about Trump just because you and some other want him to.

You might remember that when he won the Nobel Prize for Literature, he refused to accept it or to go to any ceremony about it. He had no reason to accept it and didn't need the money. So, he shined the Nobel Committee on. That's Dylan.

Like I said, find a way to get in touch with him and ask him your question. Let us know what he says, OK?

You have every right to ask the question, which you did in a mild way IMO. I would like to know too. I think his response / lack of response to trump is interesting. But like you, I don't know one way or the other so it does no harm to ask. People will make of it what they will, and if they don't care maybe this thread isn't for them.

that it would make zero difference if he did. I doubt there are any people who would care. But if he made a good taco song, I'd listen to it.

I'm trying to remember ...... the last political song Bob did that comes to mind was about my late friend Rubin. Jacques Levy wrote most of the lyrics, minus the first eight words, and Bob added the music. Somewhere in my files, I have the records of how much money he made from the song and concerts. If Bob could make money off a song about the felon, I think he would do it.

IIRC, Dylan has a sense of humor and is a self described asshole.

That said, just my two cents, he doesn't have to say shit.

His body of work speaks quite well.

"
Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail

The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder

That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze

Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder

Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind

Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind

An’ the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time

An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing"

I think he said enough.

But what about the 70s? Do they get a pass? Where's the Captain and Tennille? Barry Manilow? The Partridge Family? Hmm?!

And the 80s? Hello, Madonna? Hall and/or Oates? Adam Ant?

The 90s? Marky Mark? Ricky Martin? Spice Girls? Sir Mix-A-Lot?

Come on, slackers! It's all hands on deck and the world's democracy is on the line!!

Captain and Tennille are both dead as is Shirley Jones and David Cassidy. Danny Bonaduce supports donald dump. Not sure about Susan Dey. Barry Manilow is going the Dylan-route but he didn't sing folk songs about the real world. Just pop. Marky Mark? Pretty sure he's a trumper. Ricky Martin Democrat. Madonna, I put higher than Dylan just for her big hit 'Like a Prayer' that totally pissed off the Catholic Church. Spice Girls, Adam Ant are brits. Sir Mix-a-Lot was a self-described Independent back in 2012. And finally, Hall & Oates aren't involved politically. At least publicly. Although their ongoing feud is. There you go.
