Democrat Rep. Jim McGovern announced the sudden death of his 23-year-old daughter, Molly McGovern, who was battling a “rare cancer diagnosis.” McGovern, wife Lisa, and son Patrick, released a joint statement Thursday breaking the news of Molly’s passing, saying she “will always be the soul of our family.” “Even as she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity—refusing to let her illness slow her down,” the statement read. Molly passed away in Italy while visiting a friend and his family after having completed a semester abroad in Australia. The family said she “radiated pure joy,” adding that “if you ever met Molly, you carried a piece of her light with you.” McGovern, a long-time critic of Trump, received bipartisan condolences for his family’s loss. Republican Rep. Mike Lawler posted on X: “It is hard to process and fathom the unbearable grief associated with their loss. Keeping the entire McGovern family in our prayers.” Last week, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs also announced the passing of his daughter, Cosette, from cancer.

😢😢😢

The slashing of medical and specifically cancer research funding is a travesty that doesn’t only impact democrats. That has to be a gut punch to (Dem families) facing this battle, but it surely is a gut punch to conservatives too, unless they’re the anti-vaccine/anti medical intervention types.

From the family statement Bolds are mine.

Molly radiated pure joy. She lit up every room with her beaming smile—full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant. She was unbelievably funny, fiercely loyal, and wise beyond her years. Molly had a rare gift: She made everyone feel special, because she genuinely believed everyone was special. She treated people with compassion and kindness—always standing up for the underdog, and making fast friends wherever she went. Her love for the Boston Bruins was fierce, but it was no match for the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. If you ever met Molly, you carried a piece of her light with you. She had that kind of effect on people.

If you don't know her father, he is what we should all want to be and Molly was on the way to following in his footsteps.

To lose a loved one at any age fills us with grief, but 23 is gut wrenching, far too young.

It breaks my heart to know that not everyone gets the same break as I did.

My wife survived breast cancer but I lost two old friends to it. The anniversary of her death tomorrow. I cannot deny a fear of it returning fo my wife or self.

My heart goes out to all who loves Molly, it sounds she was stayed courageous and loving throughout her ordeal

And respects to those of you who have endured or lost your loved ones to this horrible disease.

I've been on both sides of it. My mom died of cancer in 1979 when I was sixteen.

In January my husband of 33 years was diagnosed with melanoma, and I immediately went into panic mode. I cried for days. Since then he's had surgery, and all of the biopsies were negative. They appear to have gotten all of it. No further treatment. I feel so lucky, and so heartbroken for the McGoverns. Survivors guilt is real.

I'm also angry. The same week my husband was diagnosed, TSF's administration announced the massive cuts to cancer research. I still seethe thinking about it.

Rare cancers (and rare diseases of any kind) are threatened by the current administration. The payments for the cures for rare diseases will never repay the research needed to create them, since the cost is shared by so few people. My daughter has a disease she shares with about 30,000 people in the US. I have a cancer shared by around the same number (although my radiation oncologist told me we should stop the rare disease competition, because I won). Neither have any cures; hers has no medically approved treatments.

Having a celebrity face sometimes makes a difference in getting funding for research both via private and public sources.

I lost my first-born child, my only daughter, to a very aggressive cancer 5 months ago. She was just 38 and was the sunshine and centre of our family. My Alix. I will love her forever.
