President Trump is seeing a drop in economic approval as concerns rise over his sweeping tariff agenda, which he argues will revitalize manufacturing domestically, according to a survey released Wednesday. The Reuters/Ipsos poll found that just 37 percent of Americans approved of Trumps handling of the economy down 5 points since he returned to the Oval Office earlier this year. It is the lowest figure on the topic spanning both of his presidential terms, the pollster noted.
Nearly 75 percent of U.S. adults said they are worried about a recession and more than half the respondents, 56 percent, said Trumps retooling of the economy is too erratic, including about 1 in 4 Republican voters, the survey found. The numbers also show that two-thirds of Americans said they are concerned about the impact of his trade war on the stock market. When responding to the statement, Trumps actions could make it harder for me to live comfortably when I retire, roughly 52 percent of U.S. adults said they agreed, while 31 percent said otherwise, according to the poll.
Trump has imposed a 125 percent tariff on most Chinese goods coming into the U.S., on top of an existing 20 percent as well as a flat 10 percent tariff on most foreign trading partners. He paused the majority of his higher reciprocal tariffs earlier this month and has also suggested the import taxes on Beijing could come down after negotiation.
Economists have warned that Trumps tariff agenda could lead to higher inflation. JPMorgan Chase said earlier this month that the probability of a recession remains at 60 percent, while BlackRock CEO Larry Fink suggested the U.S. could already be in one. The presidents overall approval rating in the latest survey was 42 percent.

(8,946 posts)idiotic tariffs and verbal diarrhea--it's seriously time for pitchforks and torches, and STILL almost 40% approve? This is how you know America is too stupid to survive.

(162,024 posts)A new poll suggests roughly a fourth of GOP voters support giving the president authority over the rule of law and civic institutions.

But while the topline results were of interest, it was some of the issue-specific data that stood out for me. From the same national survey (click the link for details about methodology and the margin of error):
23% of Republican voters said the president should defy court orders he disagrees with.
28% of Republican voters said the president should withhold funding from universities he disagrees with.
26% of Republican voters said the president should control national museums and theaters.
Some might see this and feel a sense of relief, since the views are not a majority. But the flip side is true, too: The Reuters/Ipsos data suggests roughly a fourth of rank-and-file GOP voters are on board with a radical vision in which a president has authoritarian-style authority over the rule of law and civic institutions.
This comes on the heels of a recent CBS News/YouGov poll that found 44% of Republican voters said federal judges should not be allowed to review Trumps policies.....
The more Trump sees evidence that his partys base approves of authoritarian tactics as legitimate, the more likely it is that the incumbent president will continue to flout the nations constitutional system.
Rachel discussed some of these polling results last night. There are good number of trump supporters who are nut cases and want to do away with our democratic form of government

(162,024 posts)Why should the public care about Trump's sinking approval rating? Because flailing presidents wield less power domestically and abroad.

Reality, however, continues to get in the way.
The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll found Trumps backing down to just 42%, while just 37% support his handling of the economy.
The latest Pew Research Center poll found Trumps approval rating down to 40%. It also found him underwater on every major policy area. Whats more, the Pew survey found the presidents support among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents down to 75% noticeably lower than Joe Bidens 93% support among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents at this point four years ago.
The latest poll by The Economist/YouGov found Trumps approval rating down to 41%. It also showed him underwater on every issue.
The latest Fox News poll showed Trump with a 44% approval rating down 5 points from March and hes underwater on nearly every issue. On the economy, his support is down to 38%, while on tariffs and inflation, the presidents support is down to 33%.
,,,,,,The answer is simple: Popular presidents wield more power; flailing presidents wield less.
This is true on the international stage foreign officials are more likely to take seriously leaders who enjoy meaningful domestic backing but its also true on Capitol Hill. As weve discussed, members of Congress who, unlike the incumbent president, have to worry about re-election care a great deal about the prevailing political winds.
If the public really were rallying behind Trump and he really did enjoy 70% support, Republican lawmakers might be that much more inclined to follow his lead, while Democratic lawmakers in competitive districts would be that much less inclined to put up a fight against the White House agenda.
But with Americans expressing their increasingly unambiguous dissatisfaction with Trump, it effectively creates a permission structure for Congress to defy the presidents wishes. In other words, the more voters turn against Trump, the harder it becomes for him to get his way which helps explain why he and his allies are scrambling to create an alternate reality in which his support is soaring and skyrocketing, while his approval rating is in the high 70s.
